Black Horizon

A flight game built entirely on sound, where your phone becomes the joystick.

Players fly iconic historical aircraft using 3D binaural audio to sense direction, speed, and danger without any visuals. This project is part of my broader interest in audio games, accessible games, and game design that works well for players who rely more on sound than visuals.

What is Black Horizon?

Black Horizon is a mobile audio game about piloting legendary aircraft, from the WWII-era Spitfire to the SR-71 Blackbird, using nothing but your phone as a joystick. Everything is conveyed through precise 3D binaural sound. Direction, proximity, speed, and incoming threats all reach the player through audio alone.

Why an audio game?

I wanted to see what flight could feel like when you take away the screen entirely. The idea started with a simple question: can spatial audio carry the full sensation of speed, altitude, and control? Black Horizon is the attempt to find out. I am especially interested in how audio games can open different ways of playing, including experiences that feel useful for blind and low-vision players without reducing the game to a niche concept.
